As a film photographer in Cornwall and Devon, UK, I have a deep appreciation for the timeless beauty of film photography. There's just something about the soft, dreamy tones and unique character of film that sets it apart from digital photography. And as a photographer who loves to capture the essence of family life, I believe that film photography is the perfect medium to do just that.

As a maternity, motherhood, newborn, and family photographer, I have always been passionate about capturing the beauty of motherhood and family life in its raw, authentic form. It is so daunting, knowing how to start marketing your small business. Logos, names, fonts, websites, social media… the list is never ending. Luckily for you I like to nerd out on this subject and I’ve put together a little lesson for you…

It took me YEARS to figure out my ‘style’ (I still kind of flit about here and there at times, I like to experiment) so I know the frustration of seeing other photographers producing work after work that is consistent, fits together beautifully and really showcases their talent.

About 18 months ago I reached my peak of Instagram ‘stardom’, The motherhood photography community is quite small and once word goes around about a new account, people follow, share and regularly give your work love then you find that a flurry of queries come in about your photography, editing, business etc…

So this week I really wanted to focus on a common theme that appears during my mentoring sessions (see above). That awful feeling of doing a project that doesn’t fit with our business, style, editing etc…

It has been instilled into us that we should be grateful for work when it comes along. I still have an inner battle when I’m approached with a project that doesn’t excite me. I can hear a voice in my head saying “why would you turn the money down?" and indeed- why on earth would I?!

Expressing yourself via photography is not an easy one. The mood, the atmosphere, the message and the feelings can only be portrayed by one sense. You must use light and only light to get across all of your points.

I know what it is like, a cute moment unfolds in front of you, you reach for your phone and it is forever captured- as simple as that. The same thing happens another time, this time though you are part of this moment. A rare, calm cuddle with your usual bouncing toddler and noone is around (or thinks) to capture it naturally and without being asked.

The location of your shoot is as important as the styling when it comes to making your images unique

A couple of weeks ago I showed a quick edit of a motherhood session which went down pretty well so I wanted to do the same- different lighting, different shoot but with the same editing tools.

It is probably one of the most frustrating parts of being self employed- making social media work for me. It was a case of fitting my emotional, romantic and nostalgic branding with those stupid dancing viral videos- they just don’t go.
