Motherhood has always been a complex territory, filled with contradictions. It has been both revered and dismissed, celebrated and marginalized. However, amidst this dichotomy, the photographer's lens emerges as a powerful ally—a tool that can reclaim the narratives surrounding motherhood and give them the recognition they deserve.

The golden hour is a magical time of day when the sun sets and the sky is painted in warm hues of orange, pink and purple. This time is especially perfect for photography as the soft light creates a beautiful, dreamy atmosphere. That's exactly what I experienced during a recent sunset maternity photoshoot on Bantham Beach.

As a maternity, motherhood, newborn, and family photographer, I have always been passionate about capturing the beauty of motherhood and family life in its raw, authentic form. But, as much as I love capturing the real moments, I also believe in the power of photo editing to elevate my work and give my clients the best possible images.

It took me YEARS to figure out my ‘style’ (I still kind of flit about here and there at times, I like to experiment) so I know the frustration of seeing other photographers producing work after work that is consistent, fits together beautifully and really showcases their talent.

About 18 months ago I reached my peak of Instagram ‘stardom’, The motherhood photography community is quite small and once word goes around about a new account, people follow, share and regularly give your work love then you find that a flurry of queries come in about your photography, editing, business etc…

So this week I really wanted to focus on a common theme that appears during my mentoring sessions (see above). That awful feeling of doing a project that doesn’t fit with our business, style, editing etc…

It has been instilled into us that we should be grateful for work when it comes along. I still have an inner battle when I’m approached with a project that doesn’t excite me. I can hear a voice in my head saying “why would you turn the money down?" and indeed- why on earth would I?!

Last year was an epic one for my breastfeeding project. I put out a model call for a nude shoot and along came these two INCREDIBLE ladies. Best friends, babies close in age, supporting one another and sharing their breastfeeding journey with each other.

Expressing yourself via photography is not an easy one. The mood, the atmosphere, the message and the feelings can only be portrayed by one sense. You must use light and only light to get across all of your points.

The location of your shoot is as important as the styling when it comes to making your images unique

A couple of weeks ago I showed a quick edit of a motherhood session which went down pretty well so I wanted to do the same- different lighting, different shoot but with the same editing tools.

Meet H, the beautiful mother-to-be who kindly stepped in as our second maternity model on our recent Sonder Stories Retreat.

The nostalgic, film noir, soft feel of these images draws me towards the black and whites for most of these but I wanted to showcase the colour too, because… how good does she look in colour?!
